Under the Surface is a series of drawings that uncover the hidden histories of Brisbane. These drawings came about after returning to Brisbane after a number of years away.
This process of returning brought up questions of reconciling feeling at home in places with traumatic histories.
Kurilpa Point Park is one of the most beautiful sites in the city, and was the gateway into the arts precinct that I would often ride as a child. My memories of this site are idyllic and nostalgic.
This site is also the location of the murder of a young woman in 2014. An event that turned this location into a place of stillness and respect that the entire suburb acknowledges.
The way in which this event exists within the atmosphere and community memory has impacted my relationship with Australian history and the continent as a whole.
